Vitamin E, whose more technical name is tocopherol, is a primary protector of cells and tissues. It protect them from the damage caused by entities called free radicals. The latter are unstable molecules that are naturally made during normal cell metabolism. Free radicals can build up in cells and cause chemical damage to other molecules, even large ones, by oxidation. Antioxidants, of which vitamin E is a prime example, neutralize free radicals by giving up some of their own electrons; in making this sacrifice and being chemically transformed instead of structural or functional entities in cells, they act as a natural “off” switch for the free radicals. This helps break a chain reaction which is often exacerbated with UV exposure, pollution, age or ..stress, and named oxidative stress.
